After Gloves Community Centre scooped an award for excellence at the National Rail Partnerships Awards, Amir has urged kids to stay off railway tracks this summer.
The Gloves Community Centre, which was set up by Amir in order to keep kids off the streets, has proved a huge success with over 400 kids now visiting the gym every week.
At an event held this month at the Hilton Metropole Hotel in Birmingham, the centre was recognised for its partnership with Network Rail’s No Messin’ campaign, which aims to reduce railway crime by encouraging young people to get involved in healthier activities such as boxing.
With children breaking up for the holidays, Network Rail ambassador Amir is aware of the potential dangers railway tracks present. 240 rail crimes were reported last year with many youngsters caught ‘train surfing’ where they grip on to the outside of a moving train, or playing ‘chicken’ where they jump out of the way just before the train reaches them.
“There are hundreds of kids that die every year because they are playing around on the train tracks. Some get hit by the trains but most die because they get electrocuted – they don’t know there is electricity running through the tracks,” explained Amir.
“It’s not a safe place to play and during the six-week break kids should stay away, that’s the message I want to get out there,” he said.
The WBA light-welterweight champion was pleased with the award for excellence that was presented to the centre for all its hard work alongside Network Rail.
“We have had many events for Network Rail in the gym and we won the award due to our support,” Amir said. “It’s great for the gym. I opened it to keep kids off the street and now there are big opportunities for kids to get into boxing and for them to represent their country, not only the club. We have national champions and national finalists and having Network Rail helping us is a big push,” he said.
